The Swiss Federal Tax Administration has announced the introduction of an optional annual VAT filing frequency starting in 2025, while maintaining the existing quarterly filing system as the standard approach.
Who is eligible under the new provision?
Your business qualifies if:
Annual turnover is under CHF 5,005,000
You have a history of timely VAT submissions and payments
For new businesses: You can apply within 60 days of VAT registration
Key Points:
Optional: The change is entirely voluntary.
Annual Filing: Eligible businesses can file VAT returns annually instead of quarterly.
Quarterly Payments: You'll still make quarterly advance payments.
Final Payment: A final balancing payment is due with the annual return.
Timeline:
January 2025: The annual filing option becomes available.
February 28, 2025: Deadline to submit enrollment requests.
Early 2026: Annual filing functionality will be available in Taxually.
The current quarterly filing system remains unchanged in Switzerland and businesses comfortable with their existing filing arrangement need not take any action.
If you're interested in the filing frequency change, reach out to our team for more information, by the 27th of February.
Detailed information about this development is available in French and German language through the Swiss Federal Tax Administration's official channels.
